CHARACTER NAME: Luke Triton
SERIES: Professor Layton
CANON POINT: Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, shortly after Luke spends the night in the hotel of Monte d'Or.
LOSS: Luke's ability to talk to animals.
ABOUT THE CHARACTER:
Luke's a kindhearted boy, who desires to follow in the footsteps of Professor Hershel Layton and become a British gentleman just like his mentor. Being a bright and clever boy, he often takes careful notes of clues and even takes the initiative to solve complicated puzzles and riddles. From time to time, he has the tendency of being cheeky, especially towards a person he sees as rude. He usually speaks his mind freely, which gets him scolded by Layton. Also being a bit of a risk-taker, Luke occasionally dives head-first into danger to help someone else. A good example of this is when Melina was close to falling off Descole's giant rampaging machine, and Luke convinced the Professor to let him on board said dangerous machine to save her. This leads to Luke scaling the thing upwards to where Melina was, jumping from hanging cables, managing to keep himself from falling off one of the spinning blades, and even leaping across a large gap to Melina as a giant drill was headed in his direction.
After Layton solves the mystery occurring in Luke's hometown and saving the day, Luke takes it upon himself to make himself Layton's apprentice. Luke idolizes and greatly respects the Professor, even before they meet face-to-face. When the events of Professor Layton and the Last Specter started to occur, it was Luke who actually sent a letter to the Professor for help because of his distrust of the adults in his own hometown, especially his father. And seeing the Professor unravel the mystery caused Luke to earn even more respect and admiration for the Professor. After insisting on becoming Layton's apprentice, Luke takes his self-proclaimed apprenticeship very seriously, even becoming defensive if someone questions his apprenticeship. But despite that, Luke tends to be very curious about the world around him, always inquisitive and constantly asking questions. Much like his mentor, he also shares Layton’s love for puzzles, but not to the extreme that Layton does.
Like most kids his age, Luke tends to have an overactive imagination. He gets scared by ghosts and other spooky things that would usually scare a child, and depending on the environment he‘s in, he‘ll be more jumpy and easily startled. He’s also very naïve, especially about adult matters. For example, when the city of Monte d'Or is referred to as the city of betrayal, Luke doesn't understand how that could be since Monte d'Or is "so much fun". Unlike the Professor, he lets his emotions show more often. He’ll lose his temper or become easily shocked by something. Or if something angers him, he'll let it show, even calling someone out on their actions if he doesn't approve of them. And as adult-like as he tries to be, sometimes he'll give into certain child-like temptations.
He loves animals, and has the ability to communicate with them. If he sees an animal, he’ll usually stop whatever he’s doing to greet it. Whether or not the animal reacts kindly to him is a different matter, because sometimes the animal will lash out at him no matter how nice he is to it. Nonetheless, he’ll always try to reach out to an animal that needs help. An example of this is how he takes a bunny off a ringmaster's hands in order to train it so it wouldn't get tossed out of the circus. He'll also sometimes leave the people he's with to chase after animals, regardless of the situation, so that he can talk and play with them.
ABILITIES: Luke can talk to animals
THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE:
He fell asleep in a hotel room in the middle of a desert town. That much he was certain of. He remembered that night clearly, as it was the night he wanted to slip off to see the festivities in Monte d'Or instead of going to bed. The Professor told him no, Emmy and him argued a bit over whether the Masked Gentleman really did know magic, and then the Professor scolded him for jumping on the bed and refusing to go to sleep. And when he went to bed that night, he could hardly sleep thinking about all the fun he was going to have during the investigation the next morning.
Yep, he remembered that night very well. So how was it, when he woke up the next morning, that he found himself in a completely unfamiliar room? And it didn't look anything like the hotel in Monte d'Or either. As he pulls himself out of bed, still dressed in bright blue pajamas, he wasn't particularly afraid that he might have just been kidnapped in the middle of the night - no, he was still trying to wake up. He was sure there was some sort of explanation for this - maybe something happened and the Professor moved him to another room without waking him up. That could've happened, right?
But as he does wake up and realizes that neither the Professor or Emmy are in the room, panic does gnaw at him a little. He shakes it off - the Professor and Emmy are probably just downstairs waiting for him. He did oversleep after all.
"Professor, Emmy! I'll be downstairs in a little bit!"
The eerie silence he receives as an answer doesn't do much to help his nerves. And the more he takes in his surroundings, the more it dawns on him that he could be in some real trouble. It didn't look like he was trapped in here, but for all he knows the kidnappers could've just forgot to lock the doors. Still dressed in his pajamas, the young boy opens the door to his room and tries to stealthily sneak out, hoping he doesn't alert any bad guys that might be looking for him.
FIRST-PERSON JOURNAL SAMPLE:
[Luke flips through the journal he found earlier, muttering to himself in a thick English accent.]
I spy with my little eye...
[Luke sighs, sounding a bit discouraged. He'll adjust his hat a little, trying to wrap his head around where he could've possibly ended up.]
...a place that doesn't look a thing like Monte d'Or. I must've gotten really lost if I've ended up in um, wherever here is. I guess I know how Cookie feels now.
[He takes a deep breath. Just keep calm, Luke, remember that you're a gentleman. And gentlemen don't get scared.]
Maybe I just need to keep looking for the Professor and Emmy. I'm sure they've got to be here somewhere. They wouldn't have just left me here, I know they wouldn't! I bet someone around here knows how to get back to Monte d'Or. I just have to get some directions on how to get back to the hotel, is all.
[And then Luke adds quietly:]
...I really hope I didn't get taken away by the Masked Gentleman. What if he took me somewhere and I can't get back?
INTENT: I've played Luke here as my main character for about three years, and I thought taking him from a canon point where he's younger would be interesting. Paradisa seemed like a good fit for that.
